Discusssions Talk Radio Show
Conscious
Discussions focuses on inspiring listeners to become more
proactive in their daily lives by sharing real-life, positive
stories. Discussions vary between the world of writing, volunteer
community involvement, waste management (composting, refuse,
recycle, reuse, reduce), resource management (water, fossil
fuels, energy) and sustainable business practices. With the
varied topics and guests on the show listeners will realize
their value as individuals and become more aware of the fact
that they can make a real and visible difference.
Conscious
Discussions is an hour-long talk radio show that celebrates
individuals from all over the globe who are working to make
the planet a better place. Conscious Discussions is not about
pointing fingers, its about saluting people that are stepping
up and doing the right things in life. The International audience
enjoys guests from all over the globe including Africa, Australia,
England, France, Ireland, US and Canada.
Every Tuesday and Thursday features a new guest and Sundays
are reserved for the occasional Sunday Gardening segment -

Frequently
Asked Questions
Q.
Is it true that you have contests for your listeners and blog
readers?
A.
Yes, we have contests occassionally announced on the Brummet's
Conscious Blog. We welcome prize offerings that promote
conscious living from businesses or individuals. If you have
a product ( a book, green beauty or health product, service,
CD/DVD…etc) that encourages conscious living we’d
love to consider it as a prize. People enter by emailing me
and winners are chosen at random. There’s no limitation
to the number of times a person can win and we never, ever
use email or mailing addresses for any other means than this
contest.
Q.
How do people listen to Conscious
Discussions radio show?
A.
Listeners can hear the LIVE broadcast via their computer simply
by going to the site, and clicking on the "click to listen"
button. They can also call in to hear the show - Occasionally,
if time allows we will bring listeners who phone us into the
interview. There are also listeners who call in simply to
hear the live broadcast if they are not near their computers.
That is why it is so important that we have the guest's #
so that the host can recognize them in the switchboard.
For the LIVE broadcast, there will be a chat room available.
People can click on the button for the chat room on the Conscious
Discussions website. If they register as a listener (
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/register.aspx
) they can participate in the chat by using their keyboard.
Otherwise they'll show up as a "guest" and will
only be able to watch what is happening in the chat room.
Either is fine, people do both. Chat
rooms and email communications during the LIVE broadcast add
a whole new element to the radio show.
Those who cannot make the live broadcast may choose to access
the ARCHIVED broadcast at any time of the day, anywhere in
the world in a variety of ways.
Live
listeners can call in to hear the show, or use their computer
to visit the website where they can choose to play any episode
that interests them - live or archived. They can click on
the pause button if they are looking to browse the site instead.
Alternatively, people can open a new browser window so that
they can follow up on the resources and sites that are discussed
while listening to the show. Listners can also download any
archived broadcast to computer, to CD, or any mp3 player (ipod,
iphone...) and they can subscribe (via itunes, etc).
Archived broadcasts are listed according to the month in which
they aired. The list (going back to May 2007) is located on
the right side of the show's website, underneath the links.
Q.
As hosts of the Conscious
Discussions talk radio show, what do you look for in a
guest?
A. We look for someone who is inspiring positive change in
their local area or globally. We want someone who is passionate
about what they do and will inspire our listeners to become
more proactive in their own lives, while learning about an
important issue.
Q. What do you want to know
about potential guests?
A. We do not require past experience or samples of previous
interviews, although most hosts prefer guests who have some
experience. People who want to appear on our show as a featured
guest simply query us and explain how their cause, topic or
endeavor fits in with the focus of our show. If they are passionate
and we feel strongly about their message then we welcome them
to appear on Conscious
Discussions. After all, our show is not about finger pointing,
but more saluting those individuals making positive changes
we all want to see in this world.
Q.
What is your idea of an undesirable / desirable guest?
A. One who over-talks the host and doesn’t leave room
for the host to respond. Clearing of throats, coughing into
the phone, typing on a keyboard, call waiting services and
excessive background noise during an interview are all disruptive.
It is also offensive to listeners when a guest breathes into
the phone or has the phone so close to their mouth that “f’s”,
“p’s”, “s’s” and “sh’s”
sounds become offensive and abrasive. We prefer guests that
have their information in a easy-to-use format and provide
everything we need - saving us time and resources.
Guests
must record the booking in their calendar and call in on time.
Guests need to be aware of their time zone and do the proper
conversions. It is preferable if the guest is also willing
to promoting their segment through their website, blog or
newsletter and forums or networking sites they may frequent.
*
Guests must provide any requested materials within
2 weeks of confirming a booking on the program and they must
call in on time.
Q.
What determines if guests are invited back?
A. We have invited guests to appear again in future shows
for three reasons. First, they were very passionate about
their topic and inspired enthusiasm in our listeners and us.
Secondly, if the show seems to end too quickly and we feel
that they could have covered more information than they were
able to during that first interview. Finally, the company
or individual may have created a new product or endeavor that
would be of added interest to our listeners.
Q.
How should someone approach you?
A. We want to know why our audience would find them interesting
as guests. Bio's and press releases are nice, but not necessary.
Because our time is very limited, we prefer to hear from them
in their words why they should be on our show and refer us
to their website – and this should be where their bio,
credentials, awards, press releases, present endeavors and
so forth would be available for us to browse. Applicants who
are looking to query a program director or the host of a radio
show should be aware of the fact that sending unsolicited
attachments, especially in the first introductory query letter,
is considered bad etiquette.
Q.
What happens if a guest emails you and you don't respond immediately
- should the person email or call you?
A. No. We always respond even if it is to say "no thanks".
However, if the person has experienced technical glitches
with their Internet server or computer, or perhaps they are
worried the email did not to through because of an attachement
they may have sent - they can write and explain this, and
we would understand that.
Q.
What are some of the pet peeves that you have when it comes
to queries?
A. When someone writes asking us to promote them or writes
a query letter in an unprofessional manner, we are unlikely
to respond in a positive way. This program is not to promote
products, or services - we will be focusing on the topic of
the day. Guests should be aware what their own time zone is
and not pester the host with questions like how long the show
is when that information is usually available on the program’s
website and in the information package that approved guests
receive. If the applicant hasn’t listened to the program
or researched the site, it shows.
Q.
How can a guest or a listener help promote Conscious Discussions
Radio programing?
A.The Brummets work very hard to promote each segment and
appreciate proactive guests. There is no doubt that it is
always in the best interest of the guest to promote the broadcast
they will be involved with.
Consider
simple things like: posting on blogs, post invitations on
your favorite forums... The guest can post announcements on
their own website, and to their email contact list. Other
things to consider might be small announcements in your publications,
submit press releases to your favorite newsletters and other
publications that focus on similar subject matter, post on
networking sites like myspace, facebook and twitter.... There
really are so many things one can do to help spread awareness
about our programing.
Q.
Do you remind guests of thier bookings?
Guests
are responsible for keeping a record of the booking date,
time and call-in number. We do send the guests a copy of our
newsletter: The Brummet's Muse - which goes out every two
weeks. From this they can see when their booking is coming
up.
*Guests
must also remember to provide any requested materials before
the deadline they've been given and they must call
in on time. It is up to the guest to work out the conversions
for their time zone.
Q.
What is "Lillian's Referral Corner" all about?
A. Lillian's Referral Corner appears on most Positive Eco-News
and Sunday Gardening Segments (each airing once every two
weeks) on the Conscious Discussions Radio show - and on the
Brummet's
Conscious Blog (http://consciousdiscussions.blogspot.com).
This is where Lillian will share recommended resources including
non-profit organizations that she believes in. This is also
where sponsers can be mentioned.
Sponsors
are people who have blogs, newsletters and other publicatsins,
or radio programs that want to reach our audience. Send us
information about you and your product, if we agree that your
work suits our audience we will then contact you and arrange
to have an ad exchange. This can be in the form of a recommendation,
a blurb, banner ad, or sometimes an audio ad exchange (in
the case of other BTR hosts).
